Manulife is one of the largest travel insurance companies in Canada. Manulife sells travel insurance directly and also underwrites many other travel insurance providers, including CARP (an association for retired Canadians).

Advantages

  • A nice range of options, allowing you to get the insurance you need.
  • Multiple emergency medical plans do not require a medical questionnaire to be answered if you are under age 60.
  • A wide range of deductible options is available on selected plans, up to $10,000, which can save you money.
  • If you’re travelling within Canada, you can save up to 50% on select policies.

Disadvantages

  • Children must be at least 30 days old to be insured under Manulife’s travel insurance plans
  • Manulife policies are more expensive than the average insurance policy for Canadians, particularly for older travellers.

Manulife Travel Insurance Plans

For Canadians, Manulife offers single-trip and multi-trip emergency medical coverage, all-inclusive coverage, COVID-19 emergency medical plans, student plans, trip cancellation, trip interruption and baggage insurance.

Manulife Emergency Medical Plans

Manulife offers seven variations on its emergency medical plans. Three plans are single-trip policies, three are multi-trip, and one is a top-up policy.

The single-trip policies are:

  • Single-Trip Emergency Medical Plan
  • Single-Trip TravelEase™ Plan
  • COVID-19 Pandemic Plan

The multi-trip policies are:

  • Multi-Trip Emergency Medical Plan
  • Multi-Trip TravelEase™ Plan
  • Multi-Trip All-Inclusive Plan

Then, the Emergency Medical Top-up Plan is for topping up another emergency medical policy.

All emergency medical plans provide up to $10 million in emergency medical coverage and are available whether Canadians are travelling within Canada or abroad.

If you have health conditions, Manulife’s TravelEase® plan is a useful option for coverage for pre-existing medical conditions. You’ll have to answer the medical questionnaire to provide details about all of your medical conditions in order to confirm eligibility and purchase coverage. Manulife claims this plan offers coverage for many pre-existing conditions that other plans won’t cover.

Manulife Non-Medical Plans

Manulife has two non-medical plans: the Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption Plan and the Non-Medical All-Inclusive Plan.

The Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption Plan covers non-refundable trip costs if you need to cancel, return early or stay longer due to a covered event.

The Non-Medical All-Inclusive Plan offers the same benefits as the Trip Cancellation and Interruption Plan, plus coverage for baggage, flight accidents, travel accidents, and more.

Manulife All-Inclusive Plans

Manulife has three all-inclusive plans: the Single-Trip All-Inclusive Plan, the Youth All-Inclusive Plan, and the Youth Deluxe All-Inclusive Plan.

The Single-Trip All-Inclusive Plan provides up to $10 million in emergency medical coverage, plus unlimited trip interruption, trip cancellation, misconnection and delay coverage, baggage, flight accident, travel accident, and more.

The Youth All-Inclusive Plan is a discounted plan for Canadians under age 29 with up to $1 million in emergency medical benefits. The plan also has coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, flight accident, and travel accident.

The Youth Deluxe All-Inclusive Plan is a more comprehensive version of the Youth All-Inclusive Plan, with up to $5 million in emergency medical coverage and higher maximum coverage amounts for each policy benefit.

Manulife Student Plans

There are two plans for Canadian students. One plan is for Canadians studying abroad. The other plan is for Canadians studying in another province or territory of Canada.

Both plans provide up to $2 million in emergency and non-emergency medical coverage and have other coverage features such as dental, vision, physiotherapy, and more.

Refunds and Extensions

You can only get a full refund if you call and cancel your insurance before you’re scheduled to leave on your trip. You may get a partial refund if you have to return early.

There are no refunds or policy cancellations on Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption, Non-Medical, Single-Trip All-Inclusive, Youth All-Inclusive, Youth Deluxe All-Inclusive, or Multi-Trip All-Inclusive plans.

You can get an extension on your policy if no claim has been made or will be made, your health status hasn’t changed, and the total trip length is under 183 days (212 days for residents of Ontario or Newfoundland).

You Need to Know

  • If you are purchasing a plan for another Canadian province or territory, you may get up to a 50% discount on the policy premium (depending on the policy).
  • You must be a Canadian resident and have a Canadian government health insurance plan for all policies except the Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption plan, which is available for anyone travelling through Canada and Canadian residents.
  • Single-trip plans must be purchased for the entire amount of time you’re out of Canada.
  • You must get insurance before you leave on your trip.
  • Pre-existing conditions may be covered if they’re stable for a specific amount of time before the policy is effective. Coverage for pre-existing conditions depends on your age, the specific condition, and your answers to their health questionnaire.
